Karbon vs. AbakusKarbon on its own, or built around your firm.

Karbon is a collaborative practice management platform for accounting firms, built around shared email, work items, and team workflow.

The short answer

Karbon is a solid off-the-shelf practice management platform, built for thousands of firms at once. Abakus can replace it with a platform built around how your firm works, with your own portal, pipelines, inbox, letters, and billing in one place, like we did for Wicklow Expat Tax. That usually means fewer subscriptions to pay for, and changes in hours instead of waiting on the vendor's roadmap. If you'd rather keep Karbon for now, we build on top of it instead.

What Karbon does well

  • Email and work management in the same place
  • Strong team collaboration and visibility into workload
  • Templates for recurring work

Where firms hit its limits

  • Pipelines, statuses, and templates follow the vendor's model, so firms reshape their process to fit the product.
  • Feature requests compete with thousands of other firms and ship on the vendor's schedule, if at all.
  • Edge cases (expat returns, multi-entity households, Spanish-speaking clients) end up in workarounds and spreadsheets.

Karbon: common questions

Can Abakus replace Karbon?
Yes, and for many firms that's the goal. For Wicklow Expat Tax we built the whole operating platform (client portal, documents, pipelines, custom inbox, engagement letters, and billing) around how they work, in place of separate subscriptions. We migrate one piece at a time and never mid-season. If you'd rather keep Karbon for now, we build on top of it and you can switch later.
How does Abakus connect to Karbon?
Through the official integration options Karbon offers, such as its API, webhooks, or connectors for platforms like Zapier and Make, plus email and document workflows around it. Every connection is documented in plain language.
How fast can you change an automation built around Karbon?
Most changes are live within hours. Because the rules are built for your firm only, we don't wait on a vendor roadmap or an update that has to satisfy thousands of other firms.
